Welcome To Year 4

A message from Miss Rundle and Mrs O'Donnell

Miss Rundle teaches Year 4 Monday to Wednesday and Mrs O'Donnell teaches Year 4 Thursday and Friday.  Our Teaching Assistant, Mrs Seymour, also supports Year 4 in class.

Year 4 work incredibly hard and enjoy other activities such as swimming at our local pool.

They love learning about a range of topics such as the Romans, volcanoes and even fashion design!

Termly overview

This term, in English, we will be developing our reading skills through vocabulary, retrieval, prediction and questioning activities using a range of engaging texts. We will be writing historical texts, diary entries, finding tales, information texts, biographies and poetry, while continuing to strengthen our grammar through work on fronted adverbials, noun phrases, determiners and sentence structure.

In Mathematics, we will be building confidence with place value to 10,000, number sequences, addition and subtraction of four-digit numbers, Roman numerals, perimeter, multiplication, division and area.

In Science, we will be learning about living things and their habitats before investigating the properties of different materials.

In Religious Education, we will be exploring themes of family, belonging and faith through topics including the Domestic Church, Judaism, Advent, Christmas and Reconciliation.

In History, we will be learning about the Roman Empire and discovering the impact the Romans had on Britain. In Geography, we will begin exploring powerful natural events through our study of volcanoes and earthquakes.

In Computing, we will be developing our understanding of online safety, learning about health, wellbeing, privacy and security online. We will also create digital projects using programming and audio editing, including producing our own podcasts.

Our creative curriculum will include illuminated lettering and patterns in Art, alongside creating and designing unique footwear in Design Technology. In Music, we will develop notation, sight-reading and drumming skills. In PE, we will build teamwork and physical skills through challenge games, football and netball. Through PSHE, we will explore diversity, equality and our place within modern Britain.

This term, in English, we will continue to strengthen our comprehension skills through inference and summarising. Our writing will include portal tales, non-chronological reports, science-fiction stories, recounts, newspaper articles and poetry. We will also develop our understanding of clauses, conjunctions, prefixes, suffixes and apostrophes.

In Mathematics, we will focus on multiplication and division strategies, written calculation methods, fractions and decimals.

In Science, we will investigate sound and hearing before learning how electricity works through practical work with circuits.

In Religious Education, we will be exploring topics linked to community, the Eucharist, Lent and Easter, helping us deepen our understanding of Christian beliefs and traditions.

In History, we will continue learning about the Roman Empire and its lasting influence on Britain. In Geography, we will continue our study of volcanoes and earthquakes, exploring how these natural processes shape our world.

In Computing, we will learn how computer networks and the internet work, evaluate online information and use data loggers to collect and analyse information.

In Art, we will create textured tile sculptures inspired by different artistic styles. In Design Technology, we will combine our learning in science and technology by designing and creating electrical "Action Artbots".

In Music, we will explore musical texture, ostinato patterns and prepare for our Easter performances. In PE, we will develop our athletic, gymnastics and tennis skills. Through PSHE, we will focus on recognising and understanding our emotions and how to manage them positively.

This term, in English, we will be exploring Greek myths, persuasive writing, warning tales, dilemma stories and poetry. We will consolidate the reading and writing skills developed throughout the year, building confidence and independence in our learning.

In Mathematics, we will deepen our understanding of decimals, money and time before moving on to statistics, geometry, position and direction.

In Science, we will continue our work on electricity by investigating conductors and insulators before learning about animals, including humans.

In Religious Education, we will explore themes of new life, building bridges, God's people and Islam, helping us understand different beliefs and communities.

In History, we will study the Ancient Greeks and discover their achievements and influence on the modern world. In Geography, we will investigate coastal environments and learn about the physical and human features of coastlines.

In Computing, we will develop our skills in photo editing and programming, creating digital images and designing games using loops and coding techniques.

Our creative curriculum will include mixed media artwork inspired by dreams in Art and food and nutrition projects in Design Technology, where we will prepare and evaluate pasta dishes.

In Music, we will explore programme music and composition, creating pieces that tell a story. In PE, we will develop our cricket and athletics skills while continuing to build teamwork and resilience. Through PSHE, we will learn about managing money, healthy minds and our role within caring communities.
