Welcome To Year 3

A message from Mr Nicholson

Mr Nicholson teaches in Year 3 and receives support from Mrs Bond, a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

The transition from Infants to Juniors is carefully managed and children in Year 3 are always excited to access our ‘Junior Yard!’.

Year 3 have lots of exciting opportunities and enjoy our broad and balanced curriculum.

Termly overview

This term, in English, we will be developing our reading and writing skills through exciting texts including Stone Age Boy, Woolly Mammoths, Charlotte's Web and The Street Beneath My Feet. We will be writing portal stories, non-chronological reports, fantasy stories, explanation texts and poetry, while continuing to build our spelling, grammar and vocabulary knowledge.

In Mathematics, we will be strengthening our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction before moving on to multiplication and division.

In Science, we will be investigating rocks, soils and fossils, before exploring how light helps us to see and understanding how shadows are formed.

In Religious Education, we will be learning about homes, promises, Judaism, visitors and Advent, helping us to deepen our understanding of faith and belonging.

In History, we will be travelling back in time to discover how people lived during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. In Geography, we will be exploring My Place in the World, learning about our local area and how it connects to the wider world.

In Computing, we will be learning about computer systems and networks and developing our creativity through animation projects.

Our creative curriculum will include creating mixed media artwork and pop portraits in Art, as well as exploring branding and packaging in Design Technology.

In PE, we will be developing our skills through football, multi-sports, gymnastics and netball activities. Through PSHE, we will be learning about our place in the wider world and recognising that we are each uniquely created and valued. In Music, we will explore note values, rests and begin performing using melodic instruments. In French, we will learn vocabulary linked to family and talking about ourselves.

This term, in English, we will be enjoying texts such as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and Leon and the Place Between. We will be writing recounts, newspaper reports and adventure stories while continuing to develop our grammar, punctuation and spelling skills.

In Mathematics, we will continue our work on multiplication and division before moving on to length, perimeter, fractions, mass and capacity.

In Science, we will be investigating forces and magnets and learning about how plants grow and survive.

In Religious Education, we will be learning about our local church, the Eucharist, Lent and Easter, helping us to understand important events and celebrations within the Christian faith.

In History, we will begin our study of the Ancient Egyptians, discovering what life was like in one of the world's earliest civilisations. In Geography, we will explore coastal environments and learn about the physical and human features of coasts.

In Computing, we will develop our digital skills through desktop publishing and branching databases.

In Art, we will create paintings inspired by Art Nouveau patterns found in nature.

In PE, we will take part in dance, sports hall athletics, swimming and rugby. Through PSHE, we will learn about loving others and understanding our responsibilities within the wider world. In Music, we will explore composing with pitched notes and different instrumental sounds. In French, we will continue developing our language skills through learning about friends and everyday conversations.

This term, in English, we will be reading The Iron Giant and The BFG, using these texts to inspire fairy tales, fantasy stories and persuasive writing. We will continue to build confidence and independence in our reading and writing as we prepare for Year 4.

In Mathematics, we will explore fractions, time, money, measurement, shape and statistics, applying our knowledge to a range of practical problem-solving activities.

In Science, we will learn about animals, including humans, and discover how scientists and their inventions have changed our world.

In Religious Education, we will be exploring Pentecost, reconciliation and special places, reflecting on faith, community and belonging.

In History, we will continue our study of the Ancient Egyptians, investigating their achievements, beliefs and lasting influence. In Geography, we will build on our understanding of coastal environments and the importance of Britain's coastline.

In Computing, we will create music using sequencing software and learn how events and actions are used within programming.

Our creative learning will include designing and making moving monsters using pneumatic mechanisms in Design Technology, as well as developing our knowledge of cooking and nutrition.

In PE, we will further develop our skills through swimming, cricket, athletics and tennis. Through PSHE, we will focus on living within our community and preparing confidently for transition into Year 4. In Music, we will continue developing our performance and composition skills. In French, we will continue building confidence in speaking and understanding simple conversational French.
