This term, our learning will begin with the topics Marvellous Me! and Home Sweet Home, helping children settle confidently into school life and develop positive relationships with their peers and adults. Through our daily routines and learning experiences, we will encourage children to become independent, resilient and curious learners.
In Communication and Language, we will develop our speaking and listening skills through story times, discussions, role play and small group activities. Children will enjoy opportunities to share their ideas, answer questions and build confidence when communicating with others.
In Literacy, we will begin our phonics journey, learning to recognise sounds, blend and segment words and form letters correctly. Through key texts including Owl Babies and The Three Little Pigs, children will enjoy storytelling, labelling, word building and early sentence writing.
In Mathematics, we will build strong foundations in counting, recognising numbers, comparing quantities and exploring patterns through practical and engaging activities.
In Personal, Social and Emotional Development, we will learn how to manage emotions, make friendships, develop confidence and become increasingly independent. We will also explore healthy lifestyles, personal care and the importance of kindness and respect.
In Physical Development, we will develop our gross motor skills through multi-skills activities, ball skills and dance. Children will practise coordination, balance, movement and spatial awareness while building strength and confidence.
In Understanding the World, we will observe seasonal changes during autumn and explore materials through exciting investigations such as ice experiments. We will also learn about celebrations such as Diwali, Christmas and Remembrance Day.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we will explore mark-making, drawing and painting while developing creativity and imagination through a wide range of artistic experiences. In Music, we will learn and perform nursery rhymes and begin moving to music by exploring different tempos and rhythms.
In Religious Education, we will learn about God's wonderful creation and hear the story of Jesus' birth through topics including Creation and Covenant and Prophecy and Promise. Children will begin to understand that they are unique and loved by God.
This term, our topics People Who Help Us and A Bug's Life will inspire children to explore the world around them through practical experiences, investigations and imaginative play. We will continue to develop confidence, independence and a love of learning across all areas of the curriculum.
In Communication and Language, we will continue developing speaking and listening skills through role play, questioning and collaborative activities. Children will have opportunities to explain their ideas and participate in discussions with increasing confidence.
In Literacy, we will build on our phonics knowledge through story mapping, independent writing, innovation of stories, speech bubbles and dictation activities. Using texts such as Supertato and The Little Red Hen, children will begin writing simple sentences independently.
In Mathematics, we will continue developing number sense while exploring composition of numbers, counting, pattern, shape and problem-solving through practical learning activities.
In Personal, Social and Emotional Development, we will continue learning about friendships, cooperation, perseverance and managing emotions positively. Children will develop confidence when working independently and alongside others.
In Physical Development, we will improve our balance, coordination and control through gymnastics activities, skipping, balancing and ball skills involving throwing, catching and striking.
In Understanding the World, we will investigate magnets, observe seasonal change during spring, plant bulbs and learn about life cycles. We will also learn about events and celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Easter and Science Week.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we will explore the work of artists such as Sonia Delaunay, creating abstract paintings and collages. We will also design and make a bug-themed pencil pot through our Design Technology project. In Music, we will use instruments to keep a beat, explore different sounds and begin creating our own music.
In Religious Education, we will learn about Jesus' life and teachings through topics including Galilee to Jerusalem and Desert to Garden. Children will explore important Gospel stories and learn about Holy Week and Easter.
This term, our topics Paddington's Adventure and At the Seaside will provide exciting opportunities for exploration, discovery and preparation for the move into Year 1. Children will continue to build independence, resilience and confidence in their learning.
In Communication and Language, we will continue developing vocabulary, speaking and listening skills through storytelling, discussions and imaginative role-play experiences such as cafés, campsites, travel agents and festival settings.
In Literacy, we will use texts including Mr Gumpy's Outing and Clean Up! to inspire story writing, independent writing, extended sentences and further phonics development. Children will be encouraged to apply their reading and writing skills confidently across their learning.
In Mathematics, we will continue applying our mathematical understanding through problem-solving, reasoning and practical investigations, preparing children for the learning expectations of Year 1.
In Personal, Social and Emotional Development, we will focus on developing confidence, responsibility and readiness for transition, while continuing to strengthen friendships and independence skills.
In Physical Development, we will practise football skills, athletics, running, jumping, balancing and throwing activities to further develop coordination, control and physical confidence.
In Understanding the World, we will learn about Earth, transport and materials before investigating floating and sinking. We will also explore the natural world through topics such as World Bee Day, World Ocean Day and our visit to the seaside.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we will create outdoor land art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and develop food preparation skills by designing and making fruit kebabs. In Music, we will compose our own music, create instruments and perform for others.
In Religious Education, we will explore To the Ends of the Earth, learning about the early Christian community and how people share God's love through their actions. Children will reflect on kindness, friendship and belonging as they complete their Reception year.
